pot initiatives on the ballots in Washington State and Colorado are likely to pass in November

I am anxious to see whether it's Romney or Obama that crushes these states' laws under his heel.

  • | |#

    yet another reason why...

    WASHINGTON IS BETTER

(way less police power, way more privacy, over the counter needles, less draconian punishments in criminal law, no drunk in public laws, etc. etc.)

comparing to california of course, the epicenter of (political ) suckitude

  • ShagNasty| |#

Yeah WA is pretty dope for a blue state, I've had way better luck with cops not being douchebags here than in UT or ID. My biggest gripe with the state is really just the cigarette taxes, which are rendered a non-issue by my close proximity to the great state of Idaho.

  • | |#

cheers. WA state's blue legislature is often stymied by our very libertarian constitution (we have a right to privacy)

for example, seattle has tried OVER AND OVER to pass bullshit restrictions on gun carry. their mayor tried an 'executive order' that everybody including the state attorney general said was ILLEGAL to ban guns from city parks. a smart lawyer showed up with a gun and called police himself to report that he was there with a gun. he promptly got a trespass notice (don't come back with a gun) and had his lawsuit. seattle rescinded the law

having a liberal legislature AND a libertarian constitution works pretty well

we also have no income tax

i can't search a vehicle "incident to arrest" like in most states, a constitutional fiction that is a justified fishing expedition. war on drugs crap

our miranda law is good (not too restrictive on cops, since miranda warnings are an invented thang) search and seizure is excellent (very restrictive on cops), and we have a great balance between good accountability for bad cops AND due process rights so we have redress if bogus accusations are made

i love reading case law out of california. the shit that the cops can LEGALLY do down there is fucking insane.

my favorite is that in cali, it's not a seizure if a cop yells "stop" and a guy runs. it's only a seizure if and when he STOPS for the cop./ thus, a cop can just say "stop" and if the guy runs and dumps drugs, THEN he has pc. it's insane

  • mad libertarian guy| |#

And the SPD makes up for these libertarian constitutional deficiencies by being one of the most corrupt police forces in America.

But don't worry, guys! There is a libertarian constitution.

  • | |#

    lol. complete rubbish

and before you cite the doj report, have you actuall read it?

because of course you believe the DOJ's subjective analysis about terrorism, militia threats, and all the other stuff they blow out of proportion right?

i've seen zero evidence the SPD has a problem with corruption

the DOJ claims they have a problem with uses of force, which MAY be true. although, as i have quoted stats before, they have a LOWER per capita UOF rate than other similarly sized agencies in similarly sized cities

i believe that SPD is a MEDIOCRE police agency. i know they have taken rejects from our field training program (more rigorous) and those guys have done fine at SPD

SPD *may* have a UOF problem, but the only two examples from the DOJ report i have ever seen cited were ridiculous.

even seattle's liberal extremist mayor thought the report problematic

and of course a federal agency like the DOJ would never bias a report that would give them substantially more power over local law enforcement

nope. i mean reason peeps have never opined that federal law enforcement agencies tend to want to increase their power.

One day when the discussion of age of consent laws came up she assured me that she knew the law because "our first job it to protect the children". Hmm, they don't protect the children from the other children or from the teachers. The parents are from who they are "protecting the children".

I just quit. Asking about educating the children, or whom you were protecting them from might have resulted in a murder.

  • | |#

ime, teachers are woefully ignorant of even these laws (age of consent) and child stuff in general

several have told me it's illegal for them to physically discipline a child (it's not. under the RCW, they have those rights. it's against SCHOOL district policy)

i also had one call because a 16 yr old was getting #$(#$(ed by a 40 yr old. sorry, that's within the age of consent and not a crime

they also send kids home with the belief that if a parent hits them, it's "child abuse". i've had tons of kids call to report their parent for "child abuse".

  • Jones to lead University System student affairs operations | The ...

ATLANTA ? Augusta State University?s very own Dr. Joyce A. Jones has been named the University System of Georgia?s Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, beginning Aug. 15.

Not only will Joyce be a new face in the USG office, her position also is new. The position has been elevated from Associate Vice Chancellor to Vice Chancellor. The upgrade gives the position greater authority in dealing with student issues and policy and was requested by campus student leaders in conversations with system officials and had the support of Chancellor Hank Huckaby.

The head of Student Affairs will oversee wide range of student services provided throughout the USG. The office provides direct support for five major areas of student administration: enrollment services; student services; student life; student information; and special projects. The office also works with the system-wide Student Advisory Council (SAC), and a number of Regents Advisory Committees related to students.

Jones was named to her new post by USG Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Houston Davis. ?We are so excited to have Dr. Jones join our team,? Davis said. ?Her wealth of experience in student affairs and services combined with her strong relationships with our system campuses will enable her to advance the work of this critical area.?

Jones and the Student Affairs department report to Davis as part of the USG?s Academic Affairs division. Among other duties, she will be involved with the system?s work to increase college completion rates under the Complete College Georgia initiative.

Jones is currently the Vice President for Student Services and Dean of Students at Augusta State University, a position she has held since 2005. At ASU, she has supervised several offices including financial aid, student activities, testing and disability services, the counseling center, the career center, international student programs, code of conduct, judicial and disciplinary boards, residence life and the first-year experience.

She came to Augusta State from The Carter Center of Emory University in Atlanta, where directed educational programs from 1995 to 1998. Prior to Emory, Jones was Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. from 1993 to 1995.

Jones holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and received her bachelor?s degree in psychology from Texas Woman?s University in Denton, Texas. She is originally from Terrell, Texas, a suburb of Dallas.

GaymerCon Kickstarter Funding Drive Launches | GamePolitics

You may recall our interview with Matt Conn (Episode 5 of the Super Podcast Action Committee) of GaymerCon, the first-ever gaming event that caters to the GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender) community set to take place in San Francisco in 2013. Last night organizers of the event officially launched the Kickstarter to raise funds for the event and to explain in more detail what it is all about.

Organizers of the event revealed that it will take place August 3-4, 2013 in San Francisco at a venue to be determined by the level of funding raised from the Kickstarter campaign. So what is the event all about, exactly? To create a gaming convention where everyone can geek out on video games, video game culture, board games, and technology. And when they say everyone they mean everyone - including straight people:

"We want to be clear this isn?t just for gay white dudes either. We want all genders, races, and sexual identities including our straight friends and allies to come together and have a gay, geeky good time. We believe very strongly that creating a space like this is not only important for building a strong community, but also showing new generations of gaymers that there are others like them out there, they are not alone, and there is a welcoming place for them, not just at GaymerCon, but as part of the larger gaming community."

You can learn more about the event below or by visiting the Kickstarter funding page. We also encourage you to check out the pitch from Ellen McLain, the voice of GLaDOS from Portal, to your left. She threatens your life, but she doesn't really mean it (I think). On a related note, organizers of GaymerCon will be hosting a virtual party on August 2 (that's today) at 6PST/9EST at is.gd/GaymerCon to celebrate the launch of the Kickstarter campaign.

So far the Kickstarter has managed to raise $4,152 of its $25,000 goal from 52 backers, with 29 more days to go.

    *** PRESS RELEASE ***

GaymerCon, the first ever gaming convention for the LGBT community, is set to take place August 3-4, 2013 in San Francisco, with fundraising efforts for the event beginning with a virtual launch event and Kickstarter. Organizers aim to create an inclusive space for under-represented groups in gaming culture and educate and inform the gaming community of the presence of sexuality in digital lives while promoting acceptance and social change through gaming.

?The goal of GaymerCon is to create a space where geek identified LGBT people can come together and build community? said Benjamin Williams, Director of PR for the Con. ?With the growing amount of queer content in video game titles and the reaction to that content, as well as the larger discussion of gay rights in our culture, GaymerCon is more important and relevant than ever.?

The funds from the Kickstarter are intended to secure a downtown SF venue for the event to be hosted and offer more programming to meet demand. The more money raised, the bigger and more star studded the conference will be.

GaymerCon has garnered the support of an incredible network of highly visible organizations , including dot429, due to their shared goals of supporting the gay community.

?It is no secret that the LGBT community has been in the political and social spotlight in recent years. This is no different in the gaming and geek community.? Commented Matt Conn, Director of GaymerCon ?Historically, there has been very little content with LGBT themes or options in video games and other geek media. We hope to show the world that that this audience not only exist, but is flourishing.?

Olympic hosts: Londoners open their homes to the world

    Alastair Jamieson / NBC News

Graham and Delwyn Cure, parents of Australian track cyclist Amy Cure, are staying with Elizabeth Gill, center, at her home in Muswell Hill, North London, during the Olympic Games.

    By Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

LONDON ? When one of the most expensive cities in the world hosts the Olympics, high prices for tickets and hotel rooms are no surprise. But Londoners have embraced the spirit of the Games by opening up their own homes free of charge to athletes? families and spectators from around the world.

Dozens of British residents have invited guests to use spare rooms as part of organized homestay schemes, while countless more have offered up their sofas through message boards for budget travelers such as Couchsurfing.

For some, it was reports of hotels and homeowners attempting to cash in on the Olympics that motivated them to offer open up their homes.?

In February, NBCNews.com revealed that landlords?in Britain's capital were evicting tenants in order to cash in on the Games by charging tourists many times the usual rent.

?I didn?t want the world to come away from London thinking we were only interested in trying to make money from people,? said Liz Gill, who is hosting Graham and Delwyn Cure, from Tasmania, Australia, whose 19-year-old daughter Amy is due to represent her country at the women?s track team cycling later on Friday.

?When you visit a country for the first time you take away an impression of the place and the people and when I read all these reports of exorbitant hotel prices I thought it would be such a shame if that?s what Britain was remembered for. We?re delighted to have visitors,? she added.

    Jim Seida / NBC News

Sofa so good: Couchsurfer Shamey Cramer, left, from Los Angeles, and his host in east London, Emy Ritt.

As long ago as February, when the biggest tranche of tickets for London 2012 went on sale, hotel rooms in London had already peaked during Games dates. British consumer organization, Which?, found a double room at the Best Western hotel on Shaftesbury Avenue for Saturday ? the night of the men?s 10,000 metres final ? was $733 compared to only $435 for a normal Saturday night last month.

Gill offered space in her north London home through More Than Gold ? a charitable organization originally set up to represent the work of local churches at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

She is not charging anything for her spare room ? something she says is ?part of the spirit of the Olympic Games.?

?We have only known for a few weeks that Amy was definitely going to be part of the Olympic squad,? said Graham Cure. ?There was no doubt we didn?t want to miss our daughter in her first Olympics, but by now air fares were more expensive and we were thinking about where to stay.

?We?d already spend AUS$3,000 ($3,150) each on tickets and I?d previously looked at renting a house from a list on an official website, but most people on it wanted upwards of AUS$4,500 ($4,750) a week and wanted bookings for the entire three weeks, whereas we only needed one week. There was no way we could spend that sort of money.?

Delwyn Cure added: ?We always hoped something would fall into place, and in the end somebody at Cycling Australia mentioned homestay schemes and we were put in touch with Liz.?

While athletes? families are usually given free tickets for events, offers of accommodation are rare.

For others, it was not just the price of London hotels but the atmosphere that was unappealing.

?I hate soulless and expensive chain hotels,? said Shamey Cramer, a postgraduate student originally from Los Angeles who secured a spare sofa in east London ? minutes away from the main Olympic Park - through the Couchsurfing site.

?Some people like hotels, but I much prefer to meet people and experience more of the place I?m in. This is my first time doing this and it seemed the perfect way to see London during the Games.?

His host, Emy Ritt, who is working as a transport organizer for London 2012, said: ?It?s a great way to meet people. You can see each other?s profiles before making arrangements, so you generally can tell it?s people you?re likely to get along with.?

Simple Steps For Your Home Improvement Projects - Social Lux

Before rolling paint onto walls or ceilings, cut in the edges with a brush. Tape off trim, moldings, windows, ceiling edges and fixtures. By painting the few inches closest to the edges using a brush, you do not have to roll right up to these obstacles which may prove too cumbersome with a full-sized paint roller.

Cleaning up always needs to be on your mind while making home improvements. Having garbage in the way is going to slow you down tremendously. Always have a trashcan or dumpster set up so that you can remove the debris as you?re working. This will make your efforts go much smoother,as well as being, clean and efficient.

To get home improvement ideas you may not have otherwise, visit a hardware store and just window shop for an hour. Even in home hardware, there are constantly new products and technologies, and new applications come with them. Just stroll the aisles with your hands in your pocket for an hour and soak it all in. Go home and mull it over, mentally placing items in your home, and then go back for the perfect project.

Older awnings over porches and windows can greatly detract from the appearance of your home. By removing them, you are updating your house with a more modern look that allows its distinctive character to shine through. Furthermore, you will find that more natural light enters your house through the windows, brightening the mood.

When painting the exterior of your home, it is very important to buy high- quality paint. By choosing a paint which is superior in quality, your paint job will last much longer. Even though quality paint has a higher price tag, it will be more durable and it will cover the surface of your house more quickly and easily. It is better to spend a few extra dollars to buy the best paint than to have to repaint your house every five years because you bought the bargain-priced one.

Decals are a great facelift for boring furniture and appliances; getting them off is a different story. If you?re out of ideas on how to remove old decals from surfaces the following tip is sure to help. Spray the decals you wish to remove with WD-40 spray. Try to lift the edges to get the liquid underneath. Let it sit in the solution for a minute or two and then gently scrape the decal with an old credit card or a plastic knife.

Installing carpet can be a daunting task if done yourself, or an expensive task if you pay a professional to do it. Fortunately there is an alternative. Much like vinyl floor tiles, there are carpet tiles that exist. These too have adhesive backing that allows you to install them easily, and they look just like real sheet carpeting when installed.

Consider green alternatives to standard building materials when renovating or remodeling your home. Materials like cork and bamboo come from sustainable resources and are used to create flooring, furniture and other items that you can use to update your home in an environmentally conscious way. Using these materials is a great way to support eco-friendly practices and lessen your impact on the environment.

Before you begin your next home improvement project, take the time to assess the current state of your home. Walking through the residence and figuring out what projects are necessities will help you plan your time and allow you to be more efficient with your work. Any projects that aren?t immediately necessary can be saved for a later date.

Talking to a friend who is a contractor or does other work related to construction can often provide some helpful insights. They will have a good idea of what needs to be done for a certain project. They may even be willing to lend a hand for a difficult or tricky home improvement task.

If you are using a tank style hot water heater and do not have the money to replace it take a trip to your hardware store. You can buy an energy saving blanket to wrap around your tank to keep heat in and save you money on your energy or gas bill.

If the outside of your house isn?t appealing to you, then chances are your neighbors feel the same way. Look at your shutters, and see if they could use a new coat of paint or need straightening. Make sure your driveway is not in disrepair as this is what welcomes visitors to your home. You want it to be inviting.

Doing home improvement projects yourself can be fun and rewarding. The key is to find the proper information that will help map out a plan for your project, and follow it precisely from beginning to end. This will cut down on the errors that may crop up otherwise.

(AP) ? Syrian President Bashar Assad urged his military Wednesday to boost its fight against rebels, but his written call to arms only deepened a mystery over his whereabouts two weeks after a bomb penetrated his inner circle.

Assad has not spoken publicly since the July 18 bombing killed four of his top security officials ? including his brother-in-law ? during a rebel assault on the capital, Damascus. The president's low profile has raised questions about whether he fears for his personal safety as the civil war escalates dramatically.

The United States called the Syrian president a coward for marshaling his forces from the pages of the army's official magazine.

"We think it's cowardly, quite frankly, to have a man hiding out of sight, exhorting his armed forces to continue to slaughter the civilians of his own country," said U.S. State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell.

Sausan Ghosheh, the spokeswoman for the U.N. mission in Syria, said Wednesday that international observers witnessed warplanes firing in Aleppo, Syria's largest city, where intense fighting has been raging for 12 days.

Speaking to reporters in Damascus, Ghosheh said the situation in Aleppo was dire.

"Yesterday, for the first time, our observers saw firing from a fighter aircraft. We also now have confirmation that the opposition is in a position of having heavy weapons, including tanks," she said, adding that for civilians, there "is a shortage of food, fuel, water and gas."

The U.N.'s World Food Program said it was sending enough emergency food aid for 28,000 people in the city of 3 million. The U.N. has estimated that some 200,000 residents have fled Aleppo.

On Wednesday, a Ukrainian military plane evacuated from Aleppo dozens of Ukrainians and Polish women with their children and in some cases Syrian husbands.

As the country delves further into chaos, there are mounting concerns about Syrian rebels carrying out atrocities against regime supporters.

A video posted online, which was impossible to verify independently, appeared to show rebels executing a man they identified as a member of the "shabiha," or a pro-regime militiaman, in a hail of gunfire. Such developments pose a serious problem for the opposition, which has tried to claim the moral high ground against an authoritarian regime that has been accused of war crimes.

The conflict in Syria, which activists say has killed more than 19,000 people since March 2011, has drawn deep international condemnation. But world powers have few options to help beyond diplomacy ? in part because of fears that any military intervention could make matters worse. Syria's close ties to Iran and the Islamic militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon mean that the conflict has the potential to draw in the country's neighbors.

Arab countries are pushing ahead with a symbolic U.N. General Assembly resolution that tells Assad to resign and turn over power to a transitional government. It also demands that the Syrian army stop its shelling and helicopter attacks and withdraw to its barracks.

A vote is set for Thursday morning.

The draft resolution takes a swipe at Russia and China by "deploring the Security Council failure" to act. Moscow and Beijing have used their veto in the Council three times to kill resolutions that might have opened the door to sanctions on Syria.

While the 193-member General Assembly has no legal mechanism for enforcing such a resolution, it can carry moral and symbolic power if a vote is overwhelming.

But the fighting has defied previous attempts at diplomacy. Residents of Aleppo have told The Associated Press over the past week that jet fighters have been strafing rebel positions. Activists have posted numerous videos on the Internet showing rebels commandeering regime tanks after seizing their bases.

Aleppo has been plagued with violence since mid-July, when rebels first attempted to take it over. The rebels have succeeded in holding several neighborhoods despite daily assaults by regime tanks, helicopters and warplanes.

Syria's state news agency on Wednesday claimed several victories by government forces in Aleppo, especially in the hotly contested rebel bastion of Salaheddine. It said dozens of "terrorists" were killed, including some with African nationalities.

Rebels gave a different account, saying they had extended their control over the strategic city by taking two police stations.

Assad's appeal to his armed forces, on the 67th anniversary of the Syrian army's founding, appeared in the army's magazine and was carried on the state news agency.

"Today you are invited to increase your readiness and willingness for the armed forces to be the shield, wall and fortress of our nation," Assad said.

The regime has characterized the rebellion as the work of foreign terrorists, and Assad said that "internal agents" are collaborating with them.

"Our battle is against a multifaceted enemy with clear goals. This battle will determine the destiny of our people and the nation's past, present and future," he said.

The newly appointed defense minister, Gen. Fahd al-Freij, whose predecessor was killed in the July 18 bombing, echoed Assad's words during a televised speech.

"The armed forces will pursue the remnants of these groups wherever they are and eliminate them, preserving the homeland from their evils and restoring peace and security to the country," he said.

Assad's only appearance since the July 18 bombing came in a brief taped segment on state TV as he swore in the new defense minister. But the clip had no audio, and it was unclear where it was shot.

Syria's powerful military, which is vital to keeping Assad in power, has largely held together over the course of the uprising. The pace of defections has risen recently, however. Neighboring Turkey has reported that 28 generals have already crossed the border.

In recent weeks the military has unleashed heavy weapons against the increasingly bold rebels, who have brought the fight to the country's two largest cities. The military managed to drive the rebels out of Damascus after they made stunning ? but short-lived ? advances there. Rebels claimed responsibility for the bomb that killed four top Assad aides.

Minor clashes around Damascus continue, however, and residents of the Christian neighborhood of Bab Touma in the old city of Damascus reported a half-hour gun battle early Wednesday.

There was also ongoing fighting in several other cities, including Homs in central Syria. Homs was bombarded by mortars, artillery and rockets, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which cites a network of sources on the ground.

Also Wednesday, Turkey launched a military drill just across the border from a Syrian town it claims is controlled by Kurdish rebels ? a show of muscle aimed at Kurdish separatists pushing for autonomy within Turkey's borders.

The Turkish government last week said Turkish Kurdish rebels have seized control of five towns along the border in collaboration with their Syrian counterparts. Turkey alleges that the Kurdish guerrillas they are fighting have taken advantage of the strife in Syria to take refuge there.

As the chaos deepens, there are mounting concerns that foreign jihadists and extremists are joining the fray. In a message that appeared in online jihadist forums, Syrian militant Abu Hussam al-Shami called on Muslims to come fight a jihad, or holy war, against the regime because it had committed atrocities against its own people.

Addressing the regime in the nearly 10-minute video, al-Shami said: "We will not be satisfied until we turn you into ashes like those under a cooking pot."
