'Harry Potter' Author 'Seriously Considered' Killing Ron Weasley

'Midway through, I started thinking I might polish one of them off,' J.K. Rowling says in DVD special feature.

It's no secret that a great many fans in the "Harry Potter" community — a whopping 89 percent, according to a wildly popular poll over at MTV Movies Blog — would have preferred that Hermione Granger end up with the boy wizard rather than with good ol' Ron Weasley. Perhaps the same sentiment occurred to author J.K. Rowling, who recently admitted that she almost sent Ron to an early grave.

"Funnily enough, I planned from the start that none of them would die," Rowling told Daniel Radcliffe in a special feature on the "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" Blu-ray and DVD, according to the U.K.'s Guardian. "Then midway through, which I think is a reflection of the fact that I wasn't in a very happy place, I started thinking I might polish one of them off. Out of sheer spite. 'There, now you definitely can't have him anymore.' But I think in my absolute heart of heart of hearts, although I did seriously consider killing Ron, [I wouldn't have done it]."

Rowling kept this franchise-altering potential story line a secret not only through completion of her "Potter" novels in 2007 but the end of the film series this summer. Now the author says she feels a sense of creative liberation that she can share news of the discarded plot point. "It's a real relief to be able to talk about it all," she said.

The full Rowling-Radcliffe chat will be available on November 11, when the Blu-ray and DVD releases hit shelves. In September, MTV News debuted an exclusive clip from the chat in which Radcliffe compared "Harry Potter" to "Star Wars" and touted the way in which Rowling's characters "exist in the collective consciousness of a generation." That's hardly an exaggeration, and it's difficult to imagine Weasley, played by Rupert Grint in the films, not living on in the imaginations of fans. After all, Weasley finished in second place in our Harry Potter World Cup this summer, a fan-driven effort that attracted over seven million votes and was ultimately won by Alan Rickman's Severus Snape.

For Rowling, Weasley and "Potter" fans, then, any other fate for Ron would be unimaginable. "I'm going to miss the screaming. You don't get that everywhere, and I'm going to miss that definitely," Grint told MTV News at the final film's red-carpet premiere. "I'm really going to miss playing [Ron] in these films."

Check out everything we've got on "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2."

10 South Carolina schools locked down for manhunt (AP)

GREENVILLE, S.C. ? A gunman fired on a South Carolina police officer checking on a suspicious license plate Friday, causing 10 schools in Greenville to go on lockdown.

The schools reopened their doors after a couple of hours and it appears the gunman was able to get someone to pick him up and elude a massive manhunt that went on for hours, authorities said.

Police identified the gunman as 25-year-old Patrick Dean Lowrance and said he was wanted on attempted murder and other charges. They think he might have been wounded when the Greenville officer fired back at him and asked hospitals in the area to be on the lookout in case anyone came in with a gunshot wound.

The shooting happened around 10 a.m. at an apartment complex, police spokeswoman Alia Urps said.

The suspect was able to run into nearby woods. Several dozen officers who happened to be in a training session nearby rushed to help search, along with teams of tracking dogs authorities said.

The shooting happened after an officer checking license plates in a hotel parking lot found that a plate on a GMC Yukon was listed for a Honda, Urps said. When she went inside the hotel to inquire about the driver, the suspect drove off in the SUV. The officer got into her patrol car and tried to pull the suspect over on Interstate 85, but he sped up, and she abandoned the chase, Urps said.

"We do not pursue for minor traffic infractions, and at that point, that's all that we had," she said.

Another officer found the vehicle in an apartment parking lot, and as she approached the building, the suspect shot at her, she said.

The SUV was stolen in a carjacking three weeks ago in a motel parking lot in Spartanburg, a city about 30 miles east, police said.

Lowrance was wanted on warrants for four counts of attempted murder and other charges after he tried to rob a Wendy's in Greenville last Sunday, authorities said.

Investigators said Lowrance came into the restaurant after closing time and demanded that the three workers inside open the safe. The employees told him only the manager had the combination and she was outside.

The gunman forced the workers outside, where the manager was in her car, trying to drive off. The suspect fired at the car, then demanded that the employees go back inside. But they told him the door locked behind them automatically and Lowrance fired his gun again at them as they ran away. No one was injured, authorities said.

After Friday's shooting, four public schools, three private schools, two colleges and a special education center were placed on lockdown.

Schools were locked down in several directions because officers weren't sure where the suspect went.

"This is not around the corner from a school. I don't want to give you that impression. This is several miles from any of our schools," Oby Lyles, spokesman for Greenville County school district, told The Associated Press. "Everybody's fine."

Officials said it was a precaution, and none of the students or teachers appeared to be in danger. Schools began shifting to a partial lockdown after about two hours and the lockdown was lifted entirely by the time the schools dismissed after police determined the suspect was able to escape in a car.

Investigators have reached out to Lowrance's family for help finding him, but police said they haven't been able to provide much assistance.

NATO: 13 killed in Kabul attack

NATO says the 13 people killed when a suicide bomber rammed a military convoy in Kabul included five coalition troops and eight civilian contractors.

NATO initially reported that all 13 killed were service members. But after further identification, it confirmed that eight were civilians working for the coalition.

A U.S. official said all were Americans, but Canadian defense spokesperson Lt. Col. Christian Lemay told The Associated Press that a Canadian soldier was among the troops killed. Canadian military officials have not yet released the soldier's identity or further details.

U.S. and Afghan officials said the explosion, which occurred as the convoy was passing the American University, sparked a fireball and littered the street with shrapnel. Heavy black smoke poured from burning wreckage at the site.

The armored personnel carrier, known as a Rhino, was sandwiched between of a convoy of mine-resistant military vehicles traveling on a four-lane highway frequently used by NATO forces in a southwestern section of the city.

The Afghan Ministry of Interior said three Afghan civilians and one policeman also died in the attack. Eight other Afghans, including two children and four other civilians, were wounded, said Kabir Amiri, head of Kabul hospitals.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the Kabul attack, as well as for another suicide bombing outside a government intelligence office in the northwest province of Kunar.

The attack occurred near the entrance of the American University and the nearby landmark Darulaman Palace, the bombed-out seat of former Afghan kings.

NATO and Afghan forces sealed off the area as fire trucks and ambulances rushed in. An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw two NATO helicopters landing to airlift casualties, while coalition troops using loudspeakers ordered bystanders to evacuate the area.

Story: NATO: 30 insurgents killed in eastern Afghanistan

It was the deadliest single attack against the U.S.-led coalition since the Taliban shot down a NATO helicopter on Aug. 6 in an eastern Afghan province, killing 30 U.S. troops, most elite Navy SEALs, and eight Afghans.

In other violence, a man wearing an Afghan military uniform opened fire on a joint NATO-Afghan base, killing three NATO service members in Uruzgan province, an area in the restive south that is traditionally viewed as the Taliban's stronghold.

Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Mohammad Zahir Azimi said officials were investigating whether the shooter, who was killed in the incident, was a member of the Afghan army or a militant wearing an army uniform.

Earlier Saturday, a female suicide bomber blew herself up as she tried to attack a local government office in the capital of Kunar province, a hotbed of militancy in northeast Afghanistan along the Pakistan border.

Abdul Sabor Allayar, deputy provincial police chief, said the guards outside the government's intelligence office in Asad Abad became suspicious of the woman and started shooting, at which point she detonated her explosives.

There were no other casualties in that attack.

Afghan and U.S.-led coalition forces conducted operations earlier this month, killing more than 100 insurgents in an effort to curb violence in rugged areas of Kunar where the coalition and Afghan government have a light footprint.

Coalition: Two members of Haqqani network captured
Farther south along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, Afghan and coalition forces captured two leaders of the Haqqani network and two other suspected insurgents in Sarobi district of Paktika province, the coalition said.

Haqqani fighters, who are affiliated with the Taliban and al-Qaida, are heavily rooted in Paktika and neighboring Paktia and Khost provinces.

One of the captured leaders provided insurgent fighters with funding, weapons, supplies and hideouts, and the other coordinated attacks against Afghan forces, the coalition said.

Game 7: Carpenter starts, can Rangers recover? (AP)

Game 7 of the World Series. The most exciting night in baseball.

Except for last night, that is. What could possibly top that?

Following one of the most thrilling finishes in postseason history, the Rangers and Cardinals are back at it tonight, less than 20 hours after David Freese's 11th-inning homer for St. Louis pushed the Series to the limit.

Truly, a Fall Classic.

Winner takes all tonight. First pitch is 8:05 p.m. EDT at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals seem to have everything on their side ? momentum, history and their No. 1 pitcher on the mound. After much debate about what manager Tony La Russa would do, Chris Carpenter is set to start on three days' rest for the second time in his career.

The first time was Game 2 of the NL division series in Philadelphia, and that one didn't go very well. But the 36-year-old right-hander says he learned a few things about how to handle pitching on short rest.

The home team has won eight straight Game 7s in the World Series, a streak started by the Cardinals in 1982 against Milwaukee. This is the first time the Series has gone the distance since 2002, when the Angels beat San Francisco.

Matt Harrison gets the ball for Texas. Let down by his defense, he was pulled in the fourth inning of a Game 3 defeat.

Twice, the Rangers were one strike away from their first World Series championship Thursday night. They couldn't nail it down.

Now, after such a painful defeat, can they possibly recover? The last team to win Game 7 of the World Series on the road was the Pittsburgh Pirates at Baltimore in 1979.

Almost lost in all the back-and-forth excitement Thursday night were injuries to several key players. Nelson Cruz strained his right groin and Mike Napoli twisted his left ankle, but both Rangers sluggers are in the Game 7 lineup.

Matt Holliday, however, was removed from the St. Louis roster with a bruised right wrist. Allen Craig starts in left field in place of Holliday.

La Russa also dropped slumping leadoff man Rafael Furcal to seventh in the lineup and Skip Schumaker to eighth. Second baseman Ryan Theriot is at the top of the order and Craig bats second in front of Albert Pujols.

Holliday's absence might not be such a terrible thing for the Cardinals.

Sure, it shortens their lineup. He's a dangerous hitter and a legitimate All-Star. But he really struggled with his swing during the World Series (.158), and he hurt the Cardinals with his glove and on the bases in Game 6, too.

With Holliday out, Freese moves up to fifth in the lineup, perhaps providing better protection for Pujols and Lance Berkman. Freese has been a clutch hitter throughout the postseason, never more so than Thursday night.

Speedy outfielder Adron Chambers, a rookie, replaced Holliday on the active roster.

Clear skies at Busch Stadium. The temperature is 51 degrees, with a little light wind.

All set to play ball.

Here's why spiders will always find you

Spiders abound this Halloween season, but for those who wish to slip past unnoticed by a real spider ? good luck. New research has found that spiders are second only to cockroaches when it comes to detecting vibrations.

Hungry spiders can detect the quietest movements and air flow shifts. Stimulus forces in the .01 near-undetectable range are enough for spider stimulation, according to a new published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface.

In fact, a spider's entire body is built to detect almost anything and anyone that might cross its path.

"The spider has more than 3,000 strain sensors embedded in its exoskeleton at many different locations, but most of them are on the legs and the compound organs, like the vibration receptors, are near leg joints," co-author Friedrich Barth, one of the world's leading experts on spiders, told Discovery News.

Both he and lead author Clemens Schaber are neurobiologists at the University of Vienna. Along with colleague Stanislav Gorb of the University of Kiel, they used a process called white light interferometry to perform the first ever quantitative examination of the sophisticated micromechanics of spiders. This process combines light waves in an optical instrument, allowing for very precise measurements of the tiniest things, such as force on a spider strain sensor.

The spider's sensors consist of minute slits of the lyriform organs that receive information on local movements. The scientists determined that each slit's sensitivity was at the nanoscale level, gradually decreasing with decreasing slit length.

    4. Alien abductions may be vivid dreams: study

Schaber and his team focused their investigations on adult females of the large Central American wandering spider, Cupiennius salei, taken from their Vienna breeding stock. Given its size and impressive hunting talents, it's a favorite species for spider studies, and has been analyzed before.

This particular spider "does not build webs to catch prey, but is a nocturnal sit-and-wait predator," Schaber told Discovery News. "Our spider receives vibrations through the leaves of plants. Both on the plant and in the web, spiders (in general) will attack the stimulus source if the vibration amplitude induced is within a certain range and if it contains a biologically meaningful range of frequencies."

"If both parameters are far from being prey-like, a spider will not respond or escape," he continued.

Spiders may therefore detect the presence of a human or other animal, but unless the invader's movements mimic those of typical prey, the spider will probably not attack. With such a sensitive ability to detect vibrations, spiders would forever be wasting their time on useless hunts, were it not for their ability to fine-tune the incoming sensory information.

Biologist George Uetz of the University of Cincinnati and colleague Shira Gordon also recently studied spiders and found that when certain spiders are in the mood to mate, they drum unique sexy vibrations, preferably on leaf litter, to attract partners. Wolf spiders have a particularly showy display involving leg taps and body bounces.

It takes keen sensory perception for a spider to detect such movements out of the surrounding environmental din.

If a spider doesn't "feel" you, it can also see, smell and taste you. Schaber explained that spiders "have vision, sensitive for low light levels, but at low temporal resolution." Minute chemical-sensitive hair sensors on spider feelers, called pedipalps, can also receive odors. Female spiders release a sort of pheromone perfume that can attract males.

Aside from telling us more about spiders, the research could lead to improved bio-inspired sensors for use in medical, military, business and other industry applications.

Fukushima Nuclear Plant Released Far More Radiation than Government Said

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

The disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in March released far more radiation than the Japanese government has claimed. So concludes a study1 that combines radioactivity data from across the globe to estimate the scale and fate of emissions from the shattered plant.

The study also suggests that, contrary to government claims, pools used to store spent nuclear fuel played a significant part in the release of the long-lived environmental contaminant caesium-137, which could have been prevented by prompt action. The analysis has been posted online for open peer review by the journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics .

Study of Chinese moviegoers bodes well for Hollywood (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Unlike moviegoers in other parts of Asia, Chinese viewers don't mind seeing films that are set in the United States, a new study shows.

In fact, the study shows that watching Hollywood movies is becoming one of the top leisure activities for Chinese consumers.

The study, by research firm Ipsos OTX's Worldwide Motion Picture Group, is further evidence of what Hollywood already suspects: that the world's most populous nation offers a giant opportunity for American moviemakers to sell their films.

Because of the study's results -- and Hollywood's ongoing interest in the market -- Ipsos plans to start tracking movies in China. It will do that as a joint venture between its Worldwide Motion Picture Group and Ipsos China.

"We are seeing some very interesting and unexpected results come in from the Chinese movie-going population," Vincent Bruzzese, president of Ipsos OTX's Worldwide Motion Picture Group, said in a written statement. "Everyone recognizes that these emerging international markets have rapidly become an integral part of the U.S. film industry."

Ipsos OTX says the ongoing study is the largest ever to look at moviegoing habits in China and that it is the first firm to conduct research screenings in that country. The study is being conducted in cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou and Shenzhen to ensure a full representation of the country.

Chinese moviegoers have shown their interest in U.S.-made movies. "Avatar" -- the top-grossing movie of all time -- grossed $207 million in China. "Transformers 3" is China's second-highest grossing movie. It took in $175 million.

OTX also plans studies in South Korea and Russia.

Oracle to buy RightNow for $1.5 billion

(AP) ? Software company Oracle Corp. said Monday that it is buying RightNow Technologies Inc. for about $1.5 billion so it can offer a broader range of software and services that help businesses manage customer service.

Oracle is offering $43 per share for the tech service company from Bozeman, Mont. That is a 19.6 percent premium over RightNow's closing price of $35.96 on Friday.

On Monday, RightNow's stock rose $6.98, or 19.4 percent, to close Monday at $42.94.

RightNow's board has agreed to the deal, which is subject to shareholder approval. The company says it will stay in Bozeman.

Oracle expects to complete the deal by late this year or early next.

RightNow's main product helps companies manage customers' questions and complaints. It is delivered over the Internet ? or "cloud" ? rather than by installing software directly on computers. The deal follows a smaller acquisition Oracle made when it bought InQuira to expand its selection of products that help companies keep their customers happy. Terms of that deal, announced in July, were not disclosed.

Shares of Oracle, which is based in Redwood Shores, Calif., gained 75 cents, or 2.3 percent, to end at $32.87.

Obama: Gadhafi, Iraq show renewed US leadership

President Barack Obama speaks in the briefing room of the White House in Washington, Friday, Oct. 21, 2011, where he declared an end to the Iraq war, one of the longest and most divisive conflicts in U.S. history, announcing that all U.S. troops would be withdrawn from the country by year's end. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says the death of Libya's Moammar Gadhafi and ending the U.S. war in Iraq are powerful reminders of America's renewed leadership in the world.

At the same time, Obama said Saturday that the U.S. now must tackle its "greatest challenge as a nation" ? rebuilding a weak economy and creating jobs ? with the "same urgency and unity that our troops brought to their fight."

Obama informed the nation on Friday that the long and costly war in Iraq will be over by the end of the year and that some 40,000 U.S. servicemen and women still there "will definitely be home for the holidays."

A day earlier, he hailed the killing of Libya's longtime leader as a "momentous day" in the history of a country that Gadhafi had ruled for decades through tyranny.

Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address that these foreign policy successes were part of a larger story.

"This week, we had two powerful reminders of how we've renewed American leadership in the world," Obama said. "After a decade of war, we're turning the page and moving forward, with strength and confidence."

He said withdrawing troops from Iraq has allowed the U.S. to focus on Afghanistan and score major victories against al-Qaida, including the killing in May of terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden. Troops also have been coming home from Afghanistan.

Obama said ending both wars will allow the U.S. to focus on rebuilding a weak economy so it can start creating enough jobs to reduce high levels of unemployment. That could possibly aid his re-election bid, which is being jeopardized by the tough financial circumstances.

"Over the past decade, we spent a trillion dollars on war, borrowed heavily from overseas and invested too little in the greatest source of our national strength ? our own people," the president said. "Now, the nation we need to build is our own."

In the Republicans' weekly message, Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., bemoaned 32 consecutive months with unemployment above 8 percent.

While Obama on Saturday called anew or passage of his $447 billion jobs bill, Burr urged action on a Republican alternative.

Senate Republicans recently blocked Obama's overall bill, leaving Democrats in charge of the chamber to try to pass it piece by piece. But Republican senators also blocked action on the first component of the larger bill, a $35 billion measure to boost hiring of teachers and emergency services workers.

In turn, Democrats stalled a measure both parties support that would stop the government from withholding 3 percent of payments to government contractors.

A test vote is expected next month, after the Senate returns from vacation, on a $60 billion bill to finance construction of roads, bridges and other public works projects.

Burr said people are hurting and the economy is in "grave danger."

"It's time for Congress to focus on the American people and not how difficult change might be," he said. "It's time stop playing games and to get on with the serious business that the American people expect from us."

(AP) ? Moammar Gadhafi's blood-streaked body was on display in a commercial freezer at a shopping center Friday as Libyan authorities argued about what to do with his remains and questions deepened over official accounts of the longtime dictator's death. New video emerged of his violent, chaotic last moments, showing fighters beating him as they drag him away.

Nearly every aspect of Thursday's killing of Gadhafi was mired in confusion, a sign of the difficulties ahead for Libya. Its new rulers are disorganized, its people embittered and divided. But the ruling National Transitional Council said it would declare the country's liberation on Saturday, the starting point for a timetable that calls for a new interim government within a month and elections within eight months.

The top U.N. rights chief raised concerns that Gadhafi may have been shot to death after being captured alive. The fate of his body seemed tied up in squabbles among Libya's factions, as fighters from Misrata ? a city brutally besieged by Gadhafi's forces during the civil war ? seemed to claim ownership of it, forcing the delay of a planned burial Friday.

Also muddled was the fate of Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, the only Gadhafi son who stayed in Libya and reportedly survived after his father's Aug. 21 ouster. It appeared Friday that he was still at large: some government ministers had said he was wounded and in custody in a hospital in the city of Zlitan, but a military official at the hospital, Hakim al-Kisher, denied he was there.

In Misrata, residents crowded into long lines to get a chance to view the body of Gadhafi, which was laid out on a mattress on the floor of an emptied-out vegetable and onions freezer at a local shopping center. The body had apparently been stowed in the freezer in an attempt to keep it out of the public eye, but once the location was known, that intention was swept away in the overwhelming desire of residents to see the man they so deeply despised.

Men, women and children filed in to take their picture with the body. The site's guards had even organized separate visiting hours for families and single men.

"We want to see the dog," some chanted.

Gadhafi's 69-year-old body was stripped to the waist, his torso and arms streaked with dried blood. Bullet wounds in the chest, abdomen and left side of the head were visible.

The bloody siege of Misrata over the summer instilled a particularly virulent hatred of Gadhafi there ? a hatred now mixed with pride because he was captured and killed by fighters from the city.

New video posted on Facebook showed revolutionary fighters dragging a confused-looking Gadhafi up the hill to their vehicles after his capture and less than an hour before he was killed. The young men scream "Moammar, you dog!" as their former leader wipes at blood covering the left side of his head, neck and left shoulder.

Gadhafi gestures to the young men to be patient, and says "What's going on?" as he wipes fresh blood from his temple and glances at his palm. A young fighter later is shown carrying a boot and screaming, "This is Moammar's shoe! This is Moammar's shoe! Victory! Victory!"

In Tripoli, joy over Gadhafi's end spilled into a second day as thousands converged on central Martyrs' Square for Friday prayers and celebrations. Men danced and hoisted the country's new red-green-and-black flag.

"It's the start of a new era that everybody hopes will bring security and freedom," said Tarek Othman, a computer specialist. "I hope democracy is the path we take so all of these Libyans who have sacrificed will really feel free."

He stood with his wife ? who wore a cap in the revolution's colors over her all-encompassing black niqab ? in the square, which was formerly known as Green Square and was used by Gadhafi to stage rallies against the uprising.

Khaled Almslaty, a clothing vendor, said he wished Gadhafi had not been killed after being captured.

"But I believe he got what he deserved because if we prosecuted him for the smallest of his crimes, he would be punished by death," he said. "Now we hope the NTC will accelerate the formation of a new government and ... won't waste time on irrelevant conflicts and competing for authority and positions."

It's a tall order after nearly 42 years of rule by one man, who often acted according to whims and tolerated no dissent. Libya's new leaders have stressed the need for reconciliation, but many factions are eager to have their say after years of repression.

The Western-backed NTC, a collection of former rebels, returned exiles, technocrats and Islamists, has always been united behind its goal of ousting Gadhafi. Now the group must overcome divisions and competing self-interests to rebuild the oil-rich North African nation, which was stripped of institutions under Gadhafi.

The NTC said interim leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil will formally declare liberation on Saturday in the eastern city of Benghazi, where the revolution began in mid-February. Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril has promised to resign, saying he will not be part of any new government and will instead turn his attention to fighting corruption.

The transitional council has asked the United Nations "to play a significant role" in helping them write a constitution, hold elections and build democratic institutions, Ian Martin, the U.N. envoy to Libya, said.

"No one should underestimate in this moment of celebration in Libya how great are the challenges that lie ahead," he said. He also warned of "a major challenge in the future of those of the fighters who don't wish to return to previous civilian occupations."

Gadhafi was killed when revolutionary fighters overwhelmed him and the last of his loyalists in his coastal hometown Sirte, the last bastion of his regime to be captured after weeks of heavy fighting.

Authorities have promised to bury Gadhafi in accordance with Islamic traditions calling for quick interment, but Information Minister Mahmoud Shammam said the burial was delayed because officials were debating "what the best place is to bury him."

Gadhafi's family, most of whom are in Algeria or other nearby African nations, issued a statement calling for an investigation into how Gadhafi and another of his sons, Muatassim, were killed. In the statement on the pro-Gadhafi, Syria-based TV station Al-Rai, they asked for international pressure on the NTC to hand over the bodies of the two men to their tribe.

Gadhafi was captured alive and there have been contradictory accounts of how and when he received his fatal wounds. Rupert Colville, a spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, said the images of his last moments were very disturbing.

"More details are needed to ascertain whether he was killed in some form of fighting or was executed after his capture," Colville said.

According to most accounts from fighters on the ground and their commanders, Gadhafi and his loyalists were in a convoy trying to flee when NATO airstrikes hit two of the vehicles. Then revolutionary forces moved in and clashed with the loyalists for several hours.

Gadhafi and his bodyguards fled their cars and took refuge in a nearby drainage tunnel. Fighters pursued and clashed with them before Gadhafi emerged from the tunnel and was grabbed by fighters.

Most accounts agree that Gadhafi died from wounds 30 to 40 minutes later as an ambulance took him to Misrata. But accounts differ over how he suffered those wounds.

Most commanders and fighters at the scene with whom The Associated Press has spoken say that when he was captured, Gadhafi already was fatally wounded. In the videos of his capture, however, he has blood on his head, but none on his chest or abdomen. At one point, his shirt is pulled up to his chest, but no wound is visible.

Information Minister Mahmoud Shammam said Gadhafi was wounded after his capture. "It seems like the bullet was a stray and it could have come from the revolutionaries or the loyalists," Shammam said.

Other fighters, commanders and witnesses have not spoken of any such crossfire or further clashes. Siraq al-Hamali, a 21-year-old fighter, told AP that he rode in the vehicle carrying Gadhafi as it left Sirte. He did not mention coming under fire and said Gadhafi died en route of wounds he already had.

Even reports of the coroner's conclusions were confused over which wound was fatal ? some said it was the shot to the head, others said it was a shot to the liver.

Muatassim, who had been his father's feared national security adviser, was captured alive separately in Sirte, and how he died also remains unknown.

In a video aired Friday on Al-Rai, the 34-year-old Muatassim, wearing a bloodied undershirt, sits on a mattress in a room with fighters around him. He takes a swig of water and smokes a cigarette as he argues with at least one man who accused him of robbing the country and abusing its sons.

The fighter then orders Muatassim to say "Allahu Akbar" or "God is great" before the video cuts to a segment with Muatassim lying subdued on the mattress with his forearm on his forehead. He also appears to check for an injury on his collar bone. The last scene is of Muatassim lying dead, apparently in a hospital, with a huge gash in his chest.

McNabb at Lingerie Football League game Friday

In retrospect, he could have been preparing for a coaching career. Anyway, Busted Coverage recorded Friday?s LFL game (outstanding) between the Minnesota Valkyrie and Los Angeles Temptation at the Target Center, and upon further review, guess which Minnesota Vikings quarterback shows up in the stands with his posse?

Was this time better spent in preparation for the Bears that Sunday? You be the judge. It?s just that I don?t think I see Christian Ponder ? McNabb?s replacement this coming Sunday ? in the video.

'Hannah Montana' star busted for DUI

Hannah Montana's sidekick now has his very own rap sheet.

Mitchel Musso, aka Oliver Oken on the Miley Cyrus-fronted series, was arrested for drunken driving yesterday in the L.A. suburb of Burbank.

Did we mention that Musso is only 20? So what kind of trouble is he in?

MORE: Miley buys a new mansion!

It's pretty serious.

The actor was popped early Sunday morning, according to Burbank Police Sgt. Sean Kelley confirms to E! News, at the scene of an unrelated traffic accident.

"An officer was directing traffic and Musso failed to slow down when coming to the intersection," says Kelley. "He didn't obey instructions and was pulled over. A DUI investigation was held and he was given a field sobriety test

"Musso is 20 years old so any alcohol in his system is illegal. He was well over the 0.08 limit."

Musso was arrested at 3:43 a.m., taken to jail and bail was set at $5,000.

MORE: Miley hits Haiti

Musso spent a few hours drying out and was ultimately allowed freed without having to pay the bail because, Kelley says, "he had no warrants or anything like that."

Tricking resistant cancer cells into committing suicide

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2011) ? Oncolytic virology uses live viruses to sense the genetic difference between a tumor and normal cell. Once the virus finds a tumor cell, it replicates inside that cell, kills it and then spreads to adjacent tumor cells to seed a therapeutic "chain reaction." As reported in the October 18 issue of Cancer Cell, Dr. David Stojdl, a scientist from the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute at the University of Ottawa has found a way to trick resistant cancer cells into committing suicide following oncolytic virus therapy.

When it comes to using oncolytic viruses to fight cancer, the outcome is a consequence of a battle between the genes that the virus has and the genes that the human host has. Using a technology called RNA Interference (RNAi) Dr. Stojdl's research team was able to systematically search through the entire human genome to find genes [that when inhibited] would make the viruses up to 10,000 times more potent at killing tumor cells without harming healthy cells. "Until now, scientists in our field have been focused on engineering the genes in the oncolytic virus itself to make them work better, and that has worked well to a point. This is the first study to look at all of the genes in the human genome to determine which ones we should manipulate to help the oncolytic therapy work better," said Dr. Stojdl.

Dr. Stojdl's research team has identified a series of genes that magnify the impact of oncolytic viruses. These genes normally control the endoplasmic reticulum stress response, or unfolded protein response. In essence, when the cell environment is toxic the cells have a tough time folding proteins. "A properly folded protein doesn't expose many sticky parts on its surface. Cells don't like mangled proteins because they get sticky. If you have sticky parts they combine with other proteins to make large, toxic 'balls' of protein -- and this can kill the cell," explained Dr. Stojdl in layman terms.

"To deal with this 'sticky situation', the cell turns on a few pre-programmed rescue systems that either turbocharge the folding process or slow down the production of new proteins until the cell can catch up. If this doesn't work, the cell commits suicide to stop the damage from spreading," explained Dr. Douglas Mahoney lead author of the study and member of the Stojdl lab.

Dr. Stojdl's team has identified a way to short-circuit these rescue systems so that tumor cells go straight to suicide and healthy cells stay intact. The strategy works by applying a mild stress to the cells to force them to turn on these rescue systems. But when these cells encounter an oncolytic virus, instead of trying to fix the unfolded proteins, the cell is triggered to commit suicide.

This triggering effect also works with some common chemotherapeutics that are used in cancer clinics around the world today.

The funding partners for this research include: Terry Fox Foundation; Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation; Angels of Hope; CHEO Foundation and Canada Foundation for Innovation.

Rare insect larvae colony grows

A rare insect larvae colony that digs a pit to trap its prey has almost trebled in size at a Norfolk breeding site.

Natural England said antlion larvae were thriving at Holkham National Nature Reserve.

Adults are like small dragonflies but their larvae lurk in cone-like burrows waiting for other insects to slide in.

They grab their prey in huge jaws and suck them dry. Natural England said they were spotted in pine woods in 2005 and there was now a large colony.

"There had been reports of antlions in sandy ground in pine woods since 2005," a spokesman said.

"In a survey in 2008, the species (Eurolean nostras) was identified and 700 larval pits found."

Because the insect is so scarce in Britain, experts thought the site may have only been temporarily colonised.

Suitable habitat

This year they found 1,905 larval pits - showing the colony had almost trebled in size.

Antlions, whose digestive system is so efficient they excrete no solid waste, are found over most of Europe, but are extremely rare in Britain.

Larvae up to nearly half an inch long (10mm) live for two years before becoming adults with wings spanning nearly 3ins (70mm).

Adults live for just a few weeks.

Natural England said the Holkham reserve was suitable for the antlions because it has open banks of sand, abundant prey and pine trees where the adults mate.

The only other known breeding area for the insect in the UK is the Suffolk Sandlings.

Spotify comes to your TV with the Boxee Box (Digital Trends)

spotify logoPaying Spotify users in the U.S. can now stream the lauded music service on desktops, mobile devices television sets. Last week Spotify announced a deal with WD?s TV media player, and today the streaming music company pushed further into the living room by launching an app for the Boxee Box.

The app gives premium Spotify users access to the catalog, playlists and more on the TV screen. However, it might be worthy to note that users won?t be able to edit their playlists or do searches using the app. According to VentureBeat, Boxee Marketing VP Andrew Kippen believes in training people to realize ?they shouldn?t be doing that stuff on their TV.? spotify boxeeBoxee is a set-top box, allowing you to stream from the internet to your television through the Boxee open source software. The new Spotify Boxee app allows the music service to catch up with competitors such as Pandora, Last.fm and MOG on the device. Boxee hopes to mine Spotify?s European strength. Despite the image of being a video streaming device, Kippen says music is big for the Boxee Box, with the top two apps being music apps.

?Since Spotify works both in the U.S. and in eight European countries, it should help expand our music reach abroad and provide another great on-demand music service which is where we think most music consumption is headed.?

Spotify?s eagerly awaited U.S. launch happened earlier this year in July. The company made its way to the U.S. connected TV space via Western Digital last Thursday, though its no stranger to TV screens with its European deal with cable operator TeliaSonera. Spotify still needs to bag Roku in order to keep up with Competitors like Pandora and MOG.
